The Gloriana was designed by Nathaniel G. Herreshoff for E.D. Morgan, as a racing yacht to compete in the newly established 46 Footer Class by the New York Yacht Club in 1891. With the new rules, Herreshoff conceived a revolutionary design that changed yacht design forever. With a waterline length of less than 46 feet, and an overall deck length of 70 feet, the yacht gained an enormous amount of attention when launched for its first race. For its first racing season in 1891, there were nine, 46-Footers build by various builders. The Gloriana stood out with its remarkable design, and quieted the skeptics by winning all of the eight races that season. Forever establishing Herreshoff as the master of yacht design.
