As lobstering increased in importance in New England, the Maine Lobster Smack was designed to allow storage of dozens of pots, and low sides to facilitate handling of the pots.  Many were fitted with bunks, and a coal stove to help keep warm. These gaff rigged boats provided confidence for their owners in bad weather.
